چکیده

Synchrotron X-ray µ- and nano-probes are increasingly affirming their relevance in cultural heritage applications, especially material characterization of tiny complex micro-samples which typical from archaeological artistic artifacts. For such purposes, synchrotron radiation facilities tailoring optimizing beamlines set-ups for CH, taking also advantages the challenges offered by third-generation sources. In ancient ceramics studies, relevant information identification production centers manufacture technology can be obtained a non-invasive non-destructive way at micro-sample level combining different SR based methods. However, selection appropriate beamlines, techniques critical success experiments. Fine varnished wares (e.g., Attic western-Greek colonial products) an excellent case study exploring microprobes optimized to collect microchemical phase-distribution maps. The determination provenance and/or technological tracers is correctly classifying productions, often only on ceramic paste, gloss macroscopic features or style. addition, when these vessels preserved Museums as masterpieces intact pieces application approach micro sample strictly required. Well-designed µXRF µXANES mapping experiments able providing clues discriminating workshops aspects, fundamental answering current questions Greek products.

Synchrotron X-ray diffraction and imaging of ancient Chinese bronzes

High-energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction and imaging experiments were performed at the Advanced Photon Source on two ancient Chinese bronzes from the Art Institute of Chicago with the goal to nondestructively study their microstructure. The first object, a bronze fragment from an early Western Zhou dynasty vessel (Hu, 11th/10th century B.C.), was investigated with spatially-resolved diffractio...

Mirror-based X-ray Fluorescence Microprobes at the Advanced Photon Source and the National Synchrotron Light Source

High-energy synchrotrons are valuable sources of highly collimated, intense X-ray radiation for use in X-ray microprobe analysis including trace element quantification (X-ray fluorescence), chemical speciation determinations (X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy) and phase identification (X-ray diffraction). Kirkpatrick-Baez mirrors are being increasingly utilized for production of X-ra...

Synchrotron Radiation Induced X-Ray Fluorescence for the characterization of ancient gold objects

Due to their non-destructive character, X-ray analytical methods are widespread in the field of archaeometry. In the present study, the use of synchrotron radiation induced X-ray fluorescence analysis (SR-XRF) is illustrated on three examples: a silver point drawing of Jan van Eyck, the Hiddensee Gold Treasure, and the Sky Disc of Nebra. The possibility to analyse large objects in normal atmosp...

An X-ray harmonic separator for next-generation synchrotron X-ray sources and X-ray free-electron lasers

An X-ray prism for the extraction of a specific harmonic of undulator radiation is proposed. By using the prism in a grazing incidence geometry, the beam axes of fundamental and harmonics of undulator radiation are separated with large angles over 10 µrad, which enables the selection of a specific harmonic with the help of apertures, while keeping a high photon flux. The concept of the harmonic...

Cryogenic X-ray detectors for synchrotron science.

Cryogenic detectors operated at temperatures below 1 K offer an order of magnitude higher energy resolution than conventional semiconductor-based energy-dispersive detectors, and orders of magnitude higher efficiency that grating spectrometers. Initially developed for astrophysics applications, these detectors are increasingly used in synchrotron-based research, both for detector characterizati...
